Leatherback turtle freed
A Leatherback Turtle found stranded in the shores of
Barangay V Pobacion in Sipalay City, Negros Occidental, was released into the
sea recently, Tomas Tronco Jr., Sipalay City government Executive Assistant
III, said yesterday.
The turtle found June 18 and was said to be nesting, had a
curved carapace length of 186 cm and width of 120 cm. It was tagged with a
serial number on its right phi00831, he said.
The World Life Foundation said the Leatherback Turtle has
survived for more than a hundred million years, but is now facing extinction,
Tronco said.
WWF treats the priority species as one of the most
ecologically, economically, and culturally important species on our planet, so
they are working to ensure species can live and thrive in their natural
habitats, he added.
Meanwhile, the Sipalay City government conducted a
“scubasusrero” at the Campomanes Bay in Brgy. Maricalum, Saturday as part of
the celebration of the 13th City Environmental Week.
The diving clean-up activity of trash and garbage at
Campomanes Bay was participated in by private and government offices and was
initiated by the Environment and Natural Resources Office under the office of
the city mayor, he said.
An information education campaign was undertaken at the
beach area in Campomanes Bay on the same day, he added.*
